Learn With Less has had an online presence for some time (the podcast, blog, and other educational offerings for parents/caregivers and educators of young children).

But it’s only recently that my family has settled into a new community and I’ve been ready to start marketing my private practice as a speech-language pathologist again.

Marketing Idea: A Health Fair

To hit the ground running, I looked into local resources for families in the area.

I soon realized that there were a few great health, wellness and birth/family fairs that would be coming up.

Since I didn’t have much of a budget, I chose the one that was most local and that was most targeted to my ideal client base.

Since I work primarily with infants and toddlers and their families, I chose to pay for an exhibitor table at a birth and family fair in my immediate area.

I’d never done anything like this before, but I’d read lots of posts in my professional Facebook group from others who had some great ideas about how they set up their table and lured people in.

After a long day of speaking to people, my voice was shot, I was exhausted, but I felt exhilarated and proud!

Here are my top 10 recommendations I have for others planning to market themselves at a health fair!

1. Practice your “spiel”

Tell them what you offer, what you do, who you are, why you’re special, what your philosophy is – pack that into a 30 second, powerful punch to bring people in and hold their attention.

Write it down and then practice giving it beforehand (to your partner, your dog, your houseplant, your neighbor…) and then remember that, like anything else, it’s likely to change and you’ll need to improvise how you approach someone depending on the needs of the moment!

If you have a general sense of what you’re going to say, and you can practice “sounding natural,” then you’re good to go.

2. Create brand fluidity

Do you have a logo? What colors does it use? Implement those colors and fonts all over your display table, within all your handouts or flyers, on your business cards, and even the clothes that you’re wearing that day! This is your business, and your “brand” identity!

3. Use strong visuals

Include a short statement about what it is you do, and then let your audience fill in the gaps with images that visually suggest the kind of service provider you are! Do you work with young children?

Use pictures of you doing just that (*make sure you have a signed photo release if you include any image of a client or their caregiver*), or of materials you use. The next time I present, I’ll use much less text than I did on this poster board.

4. Offer something small that lures them to the table

I chose to provide mints (and thought I might work in the idea that “there shouldn’t be anything keeping you from getting up close to your baby!”).

5. Don’t hide behind your table!

Stand out front and bring people to you! You see someone headed your way? Offer them the freebie from number 4! Don’t know what to say? Introduce yourself – your name, your title, and your short statement (this can also be your 30 second spiel from #1!)

6. Hand them your business card!

Is there something you talked about? Some resource you can provide or some tip you gave? Write it down on the card to help them remember! I had parents asking me about bilingualism, sign language, and using music to build language. I wrote down the urls right on the card.

7. Host a giveaway!

Have something you like to give to families you work with, like a collection of useful handouts, an e-book, etc. – collect names and emails so you can give them the opportunity to get special access (and if you want, give it to all of them!)

Then, follow up with them a few days later to see if they have any questions about your services.

8. Bring your favorite materials!

Do you have a favorite book or play material you use?

I love using puppets, instruments, and books – so I had them on hand for people to look at and play with, and see me using with their kids!

9. Bring water and snacks!

It’s a long day – you’re going to get hungry, and you’re going to need to practice good vocal hygiene since you’ll be doing a lot of talking.

10. Befriend your fellow vendors!

Not only is this just good manners, but the other exhibitors around you may be potential referral sources, collaborators, offer complementary services, or know someone who is any of those things! Treat them well – encourage visitors to go see their booths and what they have to offer, make sure you give them any extra freebies you brought, bring them coffee with a free hand, or offer to watch their booth while they go to the bathroom.

What are some of your tips to add?

Tell me in the comments below!

Are you wondering where I got my marketing and presentation materials?

I purchase most of my marketing materials from Vistaprint (they often have sales, so I hold out for those!) and I shopped around for the quickest, easiest and cheapest place to find highly rated presentation materials like these.

👀 Over the last few days, we’ve shared about what Anti-Palestinian Racism (APR) is, & what SLPs need to know.

Unsurprisingly, we’ve received a barrage of Anti-Palestinian Racism AND anti-Jewish hate.

We defined APR (referencing the research of the Institute for the Understanding of Anti-Palestinian Racism) @antipalestinianracism
in our previous post.

We define antisemitism, or anti-Jewish hate, as “the discrimination of Jews, as Jews” (Jerusalem Declaration of Antisemitism).

🤷🏻‍♀️ So what’s going on here? What’s the basis for all the hateful comments & anger?

Let’s break it down:

‼️ The claim that Jews are a monolith & speak with one voice about any topic.

✅ This is antisemitism. The insinuation is that all Jewish people hold the same beliefs on any given topic relating to Jewish identity, including Israel|Palestine.

‼️ Insinuation that Jews who disagree with zionism are “not Jewish” or that their beliefs surrounding this topic discredits their Jewish identity

✅ This is antisemitism. The claim silences Jews like me, as there are many Jews who define their Judaism separately from the nation state of Israel.

In fact, for as long as the political movement of zionism has existed (since the 1880’s, whereas the Jewish religion has existed for thousands of years), there has been a strong history of Jewish anti-zionism.

‼️ Conflating the nation state of Israel with the Jewish people

✅ This is antisemitism. The actions of a nation state are not the actions of individuals within a society.

This would be comparable to the demonization & internment of Japanese Americans during WWII.

‼️ Nakba Denial

✅ This is Anti-Palestinian Racism. We see claims that there are no such people called Palestinians; that Palestinians do not originate from a land called Palestine; denial of ethnic cleansing, genocide, & other crimes against Palestinians.

Thank you for spreading the word about Anti-Palestinian Racism in our last post.

We’ve been getting questions about why this was a post “only” about APR. Why not antisemitism, too?

For the last 601 days, we’ve been watching a genocide unfold on our phones.

There are thousands of Palestinian hostages being tortured in Israeli prisons. How many of them can you name?

There are 10s if not 100s of thousands of Palestinian Gazans (not including those in the West Bank) who’ve been murdered over the last 18 months. How many of them can you name?

Palestinians are dehumanized. Incredibly so. On every level:

Ideologically
Institutionally
Interpersonally
Intrapersonally

This was a post about Anti-Palestinian Racism. Full stop.

Humanize Palestinians.
Talk to Palestinians (I’m not Palestinian, I’m an Ashkenazi Jew. It doesn’t count).

Read about Palestinians
Learn about the Nakhba.
Speak out about Palestine.

It’s not antisemitic.

And @ashaweb
It’s time you got serious about standing up for EVERYONE’S human rights.

There are MANY Palestinian SLPs and allies, and many more who we serve in our communities who are Palestinian.

Collective liberation means “liberation for ALL at the expense of no one” @accordingtoweeze

FREE PALESTINE

END THE OCCUPATION

STOP THE GENOCIDE

END APARTHEID

🤷🏻‍♀️ What is #antipalestinianracim and what do #slps need to know?

To note, you can learn more at antipalestinianracism.org and antipalestinianracism.com @antipalestinianracism

📕 Definition: “Anti-Palestinian Racism is a form of racism that silences, excludes, erases, stereotypes, defames, discriminates or dehumanizes Palestinians or their narratives.”

Anti-Palestinian Racism (APR) takes various forms, including:
✔️ Denying the Nakba
✔️ Justifying violence against Palestinians
✔️ Failing to acknowledge Palestinians as an Indigenous people with a collective identity, belonging and rights in relation to occupied & historic Palestine
✔️ Excluding or pressuring others to exclude Palestinian perspectives, Palestinians & their non-Palestinian allies
✔️ Defaming Palestinians & their non-Palestinian allies with slander such as being inherently anti-semitic, a terrorist threat/sympathizer or opposed to democratic values

🏥🏫 What do SLPs need to know?

🧠 In our medical, educational, & other institutions where we might work, anti-palestinian racism is rampant.

🗣️As a #speechlanguagepathologist , one must serve ALL clients & their families in ways that value their humanity, & that prioritize their care.

🛑ALL forms of hate must be (at the very least) addressed, questioned, & ultimately stopped. We have a responsibility to speak up & speak out: when you see something, say something.

🧱Oppression, violence, & hatred occur within a system: not just at an interpersonal level - but also at an institutional & ideological level. We must combat at all levels.

⁉️So What Can We DO? An Incomplete List (add your suggestions in comments)

1️⃣ Educate yourself on APR (resources below)

2️⃣ Request that your medical institution, educational institution, private practice, etc invest in anti-palestinian racism training

3️⃣ Speak up against genocide & ethnic cleansing. It not antisemitic to do so.

4️⃣ Engage in dialogue & speak to Palestinians. Read & hear their stories, learn their history, be an ally.

🗓️Attend a training from the Institude for the Study of APR. Their next free webinar is on may 31:
