When I had my first baby in 2014, my partner & I had moved across the world. I was overwhelmed by SO MANY of the new parent things...

So I wanted a way to connect with others & share space with other families, using the knowledge I had access to as a pediatric speech-language pathologist.

I knew so many other parents/caregivers who wanted to know how to connect simple, natural activities to play and development to ensure they felt like they were “doing enough” & “doing it right.”

I started leading “caregiver & me” classes - first out of my home, & soon, out of various spaces in my community. I have continued to offer these classes & workshops (refining the content & delivery as I went) in three different countries, both online & in-person, since 2014.

I couldn’t know how many other professionals (educators, therapists, etc.) would become interested in my program, wanting to know about how I created it, what it included, etc... & I started getting questions from people…

I’ve figured out a lot about leading “parent & me” (caregiver/baby) classes along the way:

🐣 How to increase parent/caregiver engagement
🐣 How to increase my confidence & serve as a leader
🐣 How to inclusively serve a diverse set of families
🐣 How to market myself

💡 FACT: families need to know how to make use of the natural routines & everyday interactions, already at their fingertips.

💡 The idea that there’s an inherent value in an object classified as an “educational toy” is, quite frankly, a delusion.

🤯 The Emperor has no toys, folks!

♥️ You already have the resources to give young children the “right” stimulation, play, & interaction to thrive

(Whether or not your closet is bursting at the seams).

Yes, there are wonderful toys out there. AND ALSO, there is no magic in any particular toy: it’s the interaction that’s happening around it that builds learning & connection.

Here ya go… the annual birth recreation photo 😂

9 years ago, I was extremely pregnant, we had a 3 year old, and had just moved back to the United States.

I was 39 weeks pregnant when I went into labor. We had limited access to healthcare (AND we had the privileges of education, access to service, & so much more), and wanted to have all the birthing options available, so we had hired a midwife.

She took care of all my prenatal care from 32 weeks on, and I knew she’d be there for me in the postnatal period that had been so tough after having my first.

The birth... well, that happened quickly. So quickly, in fact, that my husband delivered the baby (yup, just like this)

He also got to grab the placenta with his bare hands and put it into a bowl. That’s when I knew for SURE I had the right partner 😉

When our midwife arrived, she oversaw him cutting the cord, and then weighed him, made sure we were all ok, and we ordered Vietnamese delivery, and went to bed.

Everybody has a different experience of becoming a parent or caregiver.

In this particular moment, I’m deeply aware of all the mothers in Gaza, Sudan, Congo, and so many other places (where occupation and colonial extraction of land and resources are prized over those) who are giving birth in the most traumatic of conditions, surrounded by fear, terror, and heartbreak.

But when we can hear each others’ stories, we normalize a diversity of experiences.

Early parenthood is wild. Find your people. Get the support you need. Find information that is evidence-based. Surround yourself with loving humans (whether virtually or in person).
