So the 1st pillar of Learn With Less® is PLAY, and here’s how we’re thinking about it:

⭐️ Open-ended play is important for infants, toddlers & beyond!

We want to encourage caregivers to engage in exploration of the environment & of everyday objects.

⭐️ “Being playful” can simply mean:

Exploring, experimenting, & offering varied environments and varied objects.

⭐️ Most importantly:

We want to help adults see that “being playful” is a different way to look at what we, as we grown ups, come to define as play...

Many adults think “playing with their child” is only:

💡Following a set of rules of a game:
we hit the ball, we run, we score!

💡 A procedural exercise:
we open the book, read the page, turn the page, repeat!

⚠️ Encouraging caregivers to “play”
with NO specific end goal in mind can really require them to reframe their entire thinking!

In a therapeutic context, you weave whatever skill you’re working on into the play! But...

We want to create an environment where the caregiver is encouraged to be

♥️ Both flexible & accepting of what is happening, what might happen next, & what their child is doing.

And finally, within that play, we want to ensure safety with a variety of simple materials.

🔥 Hot take:

The single most important thing families need to realize about supporting their young child’s development is:

💡 they already have all the “right” tools to support their tiny humans: they just need to know how to use them.

All around the world, educators and therapists working with families with infants and toddlers are moving to a “routines-based intervention” approach.

Essentially what that means is that the research is finally catching up with what professionals in early childhood education have known for a long time:

🐣 tiny humans must be supported by responsive caregivers, & do this best in their natural environment.

In the first few years of life, children learn through a process of
♥️ observation (observing others),
♥️ imitation (starting to imitate others)
♥️ interaction (interacting with objects in the environment & with other people in the environment)

Everyday routines are those common threads that help children make sense of the world, & help them learn about basic concepts, about vocabulary for things around them, about how their bodies move and how the world feels, & about how to engage socially with others.

So when parents & caregivers can learn to maximize the everyday routines / everyday objects that they’re often already participating in & using, they can:

🔑 unlock their potential & boost development…

This, in turn, gives them the peace of mind they crave:

💪🏽💪🏾💪🏼it empowers them to do the big job of parenting tiny humans.

They get to combat the overwhelm of early parenthood.

We see it on influencer feeds from our favorite early childhood experts all the time:

🗣️ 10 best toys for supporting early communication!”

🗣️ “Designed by experts for your child’s developing brain”

🗣️ “Baby products in our store lay the foundation for lifelong learning”

We see it in the toy subscription boxes:

📦 “expertly curated and with an advisory board full of developmental therapists and early childhood gurus”

📦 “Grounded in the science of early childhood development”

📦 “Designed by experts to support your child’s unique developmental needs”

And then we see it reflected in the faces of new clinicians and new parents alike…

💡 When we KNOW deep in our bones that it is NOT the tool or the toy that does the job.

🤗 This is why connection is so important.

To empower families, it’s not just about supporting tiny humans in their learning & development.

It’s also - essentially - about building & deepening the relationship between caregiver & child.

➡️ Leave the “should’s” behind. Focus on building that connection:

🚫 I “should” have this toy, or I “should” be doing more...

✅ Simplify, use resources we have

🚫 Being “more,” doing “more,” buying “more”

✅ Recognize the value of what we already have in front of us to learn & connect.
